Another Way
Currently in merchant shops throughout Palo Alto, and on the counters of Draeger's Market in Menlo Park, the "Spare Change" canisters of the Another Way Program raise approximately $1,000 a month. 100% of the money deposited in the canisters goes toward direct services for homeless people, specifically those staying in the shelter at Clara-Mateo Alliance. Since the beginning of 2001, Another Way money has been used to purchase needed prescription medications, and to buy automobile insurance so a mother in the family shelter could continue to drive to work. It has enabled residents to obtain California Driver's Licenses, and filled the gasoline tanks of many homeless residents who need to drive to work. It pays for prescription medication, school fees, and shoes. Another Way funds have been loaned to former residents for emergency rental assistance, or to help pay a security deposit on a new apartment.
In addition to helping homeless people directly, the Another Way program helps the community by offering "another way" to give to homeless people without giving to panhandlers on the street.
We hope you will support the businesses that support Another Way. When you visit their stores, tell them how much you appreciate the fact that the canisters are there, and how much good the donations do for the homeless residents at CMA. Then remember to drop your spare change into the canister.

If you operate a business, and would like to place an Another Way canister near your register(s), please contact our Director of Volunteers at 650-853-7076.
Volunteers Urgently Needed:
The canister program cannot function without the help of the wonderful volunteers who regularly visit each participating business to empty the canisters and replenish the supply of book marks. Each volunteer is responsible for approximately 5 - 10 locations, which need to be visited every 2 - 4 weeks, depending on how rapidly the canisters fill up.
The money is then either delivered to the Another Way program administrator, or dropped off at the Cardinal Hotel in downtown Palo Alto, for pick up by another volunteer.
