SAN JOSE, CA On April 6, 1999, in celebration of "Month of the Young
Child," Mayor Ron Gonzales and the City of San Jose presented InnVisions Family
Place program with an award as an Outstanding Contributor to Childcare in the City of San
Jose. InnVisions Executive Director, Christine Burroughs, accepted the award, with
Family Place Coordinator, Melissa Siebert and Case Manager, Gina Lorenzo in attendance.
InnVisions Family Place is an innovative program designed to prevent
homelessness by providing education and support to families who are at risk. With families
now making up the fastest-growing group among the homeless, InnVisions Family Place
program fills a critical niche. While their mothers attend a two-day per week program of
instruction, the children are enrolled in a fully staffed, well-equipped childcare program
at the same site. There is no fee charged to program participants, who must be
very-low-income to qualify. The program includes family case management with home visits,
and access to all of the services of InnVisions Georgia Travis
Center, a multi-service center for women and children.
The program of instruction includes classes in English as a Second Language, budgeting,
parenting, nutrition, and computer usage. Children have a structured, age-appropriate
program of Child Development with arts and crafts, English, gross motor skills, and
structured play experiences. An emphasis is placed on non-violent parenting techniques.
InnVision is a leading provider of services to the homeless in Silicon Valley. With
programs operating at 11 locations, InnVision serves nearly 8,000 individuals each year.
